How Deep Can I Broach a Hole using a Rotary Broach Tool?
This is one of the most common questions that we receive. The standard answer is that you can broach a form 2 times the dimension across the flats of the rotary broach. For example a 3/16″ Hexagon Rotary Broach can broach a depth of approximately .379 because the size across the flats is .1895. It should be noted that occasionally you can broach deeper that twice the depth of the across the flats dimension if you are broaching a soft material such as brass. Some companies will say you can only go a depth of 1.5 times the across the flats dimension but our research has shown that you can indeed go up to 2 times the across the flats size.
In some cases you may be able to broach as deep as 1.75″. For additional information please contact our engineering department at 239-628-4800.
